The 2025 WNBA season is officially underway, as games have begun to ramp up over the last several days. One of this weekend’s top games will be between the 1-1 Los Angeles Sparks and 0-1 Golden State Valkyries. Both teams met last week, with the Sparks taking the victory behind Kelsey Plum’s 37 points in her LA debut.
Despite shooting the Valkyries back into the game, Julie Vanloo’s three fourth-quarter turnovers turned out to be costly for the Valkyries as they attempted to make a run in the final period. Vanloo ended the night with a team-high six turnovers while dishing out two assists.
The Valkyries recovered behind 13 first half points from starting center Temi Fagbenle. The 6-foot-4 center had 13 points, which included hitting two of her three 3-point attempts, to lead Golden State in the first half. Prior to Friday’s game, Fagbenle had just three made 3s in her WNBA career.
Kelsey Plum scored 26 of her 37 points in the second half and the Los Angeles Sparks spoiled the first game in Golden State Valkyries history with a 84-67 victory.

WNBA action has officially hit the court at Chase Center. The Golden State Valkyries played their first game as a WNBA franchise Friday night in a 71-62 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. While it wasn't a winning effort, it was safe to say the crowd was entertained.
Last week’s preseason game between the Sparks and Valkyries gave an early peak into what the rivalry could look like. “Beat L.A.” signs and shirts were present throughout the crowd of 17,428, the third-highest for a preseason game in WNBA history.
The Los Angeles Sparks stunned a sold-out crowd at the Chase Center and beat the Valkyries 84-67 in the club’s first game as a WNBA franchise. The Valkyries set a record with 18,064 fans in attendance for their opening game as the 13th franchise in the league — which marked the highest attendance for any team in its debut game.
