A tense extra-inning affair quickly turned into a laugher after the Giants erupted for nine runs in the 11th inning to stun the Cubs, 14-5, on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, matching the fifth-largest margin of victory in an extra-inning game in the last 125 seasons.

Patrick Bailey hit a tiebreaking single in San Francisco’s nine-run 11th inning, and the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 14-5.

It was the largest extra-inning loss in Cubs history, according to team historian Ed Hartig. The previous record was seven runs, set on June 18, 1921, also against the Giants.
