Ireland’s data privacy watchdog fined the social-video app for failing to guarantee that user data sent to China was protected from government surveillance.

Irish investigators said TikTok did not protect the data of users in the European Union, improperly transferring some of it to China. TikTok said it would appeal.

TikTok was fined €530 million ($601 million) by a European regulator for illegally sending personal data of users to China. But the Chinese-owned social video platform said it was being "singled out" and contested the ruling, adding that it would appeal.
